BBC's 'Steeltown Murders' Praised as 'Masterpiece'

Viewers and critics alike are hailing the BBC's four-part miniseries 'Steeltown Murders' as a 'masterpiece' and 'outstandingly authentic' true crime drama. The BAFTA Cymru award-winning show, based on the real-life Port Talbot murders committed by Joseph Kappen, is now available to stream for free on BBC iPlayer.

Plot and Production

Written by Ed Whitmore and directed by Marc Evans, the series follows DCI Paul Bethell (played by Philip Glenister) and his team as they reopen the cold case of three unsolved murders from 1973. The drama was produced for the BBC by Severn Screen and shot on location in South Wales from November 2022. The real-life detective Paul Bethell, who originally investigated the murders, was directly involved in the production to ensure accuracy.

Cast and Accolades

Alongside Philip Glenister, the cast includes Steffan Rhodri, Keith Allen, Sharon Morgan, Karen Paullada, Richard Harrington, and Nia Roberts. The series was nominated for five BAFTA Cymru Awards, winning Best Television Drama and Best Costume Design. Glenister was also nominated for Best Actor, and Evans for Best Director (Fiction).

Critical and Audience Reception

Critics have praised the series for its respectful and gripping portrayal. One review noted: 'This is not usually the stuff of crime thrillers, but here it adds up to nerve-wracking moments.' Another said: 'It's a moving and engrossing case, and writer Ed Whitmore powerfully evokes both the horror of the crimes and the reluctance of the community to reopen the wounds.'

Audiences have been equally enthusiastic. An IMDB user commented: 'This is a fantastic four part series... being from the area myself I can confirm that this case did indeed cast a big shadow over the whole area.' Another viewer wrote: 'Wonderfully authentic. It makes the viewer sit up and pay attention... Watch it. It's a tremendous piece of drama retelling true life events.'
