A murder investigation has been launched after a 12-year-old boy tragically died in hospital following a serious assault in Brentwood, Essex. Police were called to Ashwells Road at approximately 5.49pm on Sunday, June 7, where the schoolboy was discovered with life-threatening injuries. He was rushed to hospital but succumbed to his injuries. His family is being supported by specialist officers.
Arrests made in murder probe
Two individuals have been arrested on suspicion of murder: a 15-year-old boy and a 43-year-old man, both from the Pilgrims Hatch area. They are currently in police custody for questioning. A cordon remains in place at the scene, and police vehicles were present on the lane on June 8.
Detective Chief Inspector Louise Metcalfe of Essex Police's serious crime unit stated: "Our first thoughts are with the family of the boy who has tragically died. This is an evolving investigation with complexities that will take time to work through. We are building a full picture of the circumstances and thank those who have come forward. I urge residents to review any CCTV footage from 8am to 7pm on Sunday, June 7, and contact us via our dedicated portal. We believe this was an isolated incident with no ongoing risk to the community."
Chief Inspector Terry Fisher added: "I am acutely aware of the impact on our community. The investigation team is doing everything to understand the circumstances. The loss of a child is every parent's nightmare, and I ask that the family's privacy is respected both in person and online. Key local partners have been updated."
