A police officer is fighting for their life in hospital after being struck by a vehicle while responding to an incident in Northumberland. The incident occurred on the A189 Spine Road in Cramlington at approximately 11:10 PM on Monday night.
Initial Collision
Officers were initially dispatched to a collision involving a white Ford Explorer and a silver Land Rover. The Ford Explorer had reportedly left the carriageway. Upon arrival, officers discovered that the occupants of the Land Rover had fled on foot. Emergency services attended the scene, and no serious injuries were reported from this first incident.
Secondary Crash
While officers remained at the scene, a black Mercedes collided with a parked police car. A police officer suffered life-threatening injuries and was rushed to hospital in a critical condition. The driver of the Mercedes, a 73-year-old man, was arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving and remains in police custody.
Northumbria Police's Serious Collision Investigation Unit (SCIU) has launched a full investigation and is appealing for witnesses. Emergency Response
A spokesperson for the North East Air Ambulance commented: "We were called to a road traffic incident on the A189 Spine Road in Cramlington shortly before midnight on Monday 8 June. We dispatched two ambulance crews, one duty officer and were supported by our colleagues at Great North Air Ambulance Service. Two patients were taken to hospital by road for further treatment."
The A189 Spine Road remains closed at the Moor Farm Roundabout and in the direction of Blyth. Investigators are keen to hear from any witnesses who were travelling in the area at the time, particularly those with dashcam footage.
