A man wanted for more than two decades over kidnapping and sexual assault charges has been arrested in Ohio following a routine traffic stop.
Juan Carlos Munoz, 52, had been on the run since January 2002, when a warrant was issued by the Ashtabula County Sheriff's Office. He failed to appear in court on charges of kidnapping and gross sexual imposition.
The US Marshals Service said a task force in northern Ohio took over the search for Munoz last year. On Tuesday, officers positively identified him getting into a vehicle and driving away from a location under surveillance.
Lake County Sheriff's deputies stopped Munoz for a traffic violation, during which he presented a fake Ohio ID and claimed to be another man. However, fingerprint analysis confirmed his true identity.
Munoz was arrested and booked at Lake County Jail, awaiting extradition to Ashtabula County. US Marshal Pete Elliott said: 'After 23 years of evading arrest, our task force arrested this deceptive and dangerous fugitive. He went to extreme lengths to avoid being arrested, including assuming another identity over twenty years ago.'
