Police in Spain have discovered the body of a 77-year-old man who had been dead for at least two years at his home in Cabrera d'Anoia, a town 35 miles west of Barcelona. Officers from the Mossos d'Esquadra were called to the property after neighbours alerted emergency services through the 112 hotline, expressing concern over a lack of activity at the house.
Neighbours' suspicions lead to discovery
Neighbours told police they had not seen any of the family who lived there for some time, despite hearing sounds coming from inside. The property was found in poor condition, with heavily overgrown foliage, piles of rubbish and dirt, and a family car that appeared untouched outside.
When officers entered, they were met by a 59-year-old woman and her 22-year-old daughter. They then found the remains of the older man, believed to be the woman's husband, according to The Olive Press.
Woman's account of the death
The woman told police that her partner had died sitting on the sofa in 2024, and that they had covered his body with a blanket and moved it into a different room. Both women reportedly said they had not left the property since the COVID-19 pandemic, ordering all supplies online.
Investigation and medical care
Catalan police have launched an investigation to clarify the circumstances of the man's death, although at this stage there are no signs of criminality. Both women were taken to hospital for a medical check-up and to receive psychological assistance.
