At least 34 bodies have been recovered from Houston's bayous in recent months, with over 200 deaths recorded since 2017, according to an analysis by the Houston Chronicle. The figures have sparked fears of a serial killer among locals, though police and officials deny such claims.
Seven bodies were found between September and October, and three more were discovered last week in two different bayous. Local resident Erick Cortez told ABC13: "There must be someone out there… it’s ridiculous that so many people are dying in the bayou." Another resident, Juan Sandoval, added: "The math isn’t mathing. I think there’s a serial killer."
The Houston Chronicle examined nine years of medical examiner records, finding that victims are predominantly male and black. Men accounted for 171 deaths (85% of cases), with black men over 35 being the largest demographic, representing 43 deaths (over 20%). In 2025, black people made up at least 52% of the annual tally, with a rise in deaths occurring in areas where black residents are a minority, such as Downtown, Second Ward and Greater Eastwood.
The cause of death remains undetermined for 68 victims. Of the cases since 2017, 40% were due to suicides, homicides or blunt force injuries. Erin Barnhart, chief medical examiner of Galveston County, noted that bodies found in water lack contextual clues often present on land.
Houston Police Chief Noe Diaz and Mayor John Whitmire have dismissed serial killer rumours. Diaz said such rumours "stir fear and anxiety in our communities," while Whitmire noted that drownings in bayous are not new, citing 2,500 miles of waterways in the city. Retired police captain Greg Fremin added: "We have a relatively safe city… this is not anything to be concerned about."
