Errol Flynn, the Hollywood legend known for swashbuckling roles in films like The Adventures of Robin Hood, lived a life marked by scandal and intrigue. But perhaps the greatest mystery surrounding the Australian actor is the disappearance of his son, Sean Flynn.
Sean, the only child of Flynn and his first wife Lili Damita, briefly attended Duke University before pursuing an acting career. He appeared in several films and television shows, including The Son of Captain Blood, but grew tired of the industry. In the mid-1960s, he turned to photojournalism, working for Time magazine and covering conflicts in Israel, Vietnam, and Cambodia.
On 6 April 1970, Sean and fellow photojournalist Dana Stone set off on motorcycles from Phnom Penh to investigate a Viet Cong checkpoint on Highway One. They vanished without a trace. It is believed they were captured by Viet Cong guerrillas and later killed by the Khmer Rouge, though their remains have never been found.
Sean's mother had him legally declared dead in 1984. In 2010, remains thought to be his were discovered, but DNA tests proved inconclusive. Despite numerous investigations, the fate of Errol Flynn's son remains one of Hollywood's most enduring unsolved mysteries.
