Baby Lacey May Oxford named after Staffordshire camping death

A three-month-old baby girl who died while camping with her family in Staffordshire has been formally identified by police as Lacey May Oxford. She was found unresponsive in Great Wyrley, Staffordshire, on Saturday, 5 September, and pronounced dead at the scene after emergency services responded to reports of a child in cardiac arrest.

Police describe death as unexplained

Officers from Staffordshire Police have described Lacey's death as "unexplained". Authorities had previously referred to the incident as "isolated". Four individuals were arrested last month on suspicion of murder.

All four remain on conditional bail as investigations continue, police confirmed. The arrests were of a 42-year-old man and a 30-year-old woman from south Staffordshire, a 20-year-old woman from Wolverhampton and an 18-year-old man from Walsall.

Scene at nature reserve

The tragic find is reported to have been made in a "hidden away" area within the Wyrley and Essington Branch Canal Local Nature Reserve. Two tents were allegedly erected near a fishing lake, reports the Mirror.

Police previously urged members of the public not to circulate "unconfirmed and speculative" claims regarding the case on social media.

Official statement

In an official statement, Staffordshire Police said: "We were called by colleagues from West Midlands Ambulance Service, who were responding to a report of a child in cardiac arrest, at 8.45am on Saturday 5 September.

"Sadly, Lacey was later pronounced dead at the scene. Officers have been working hard to investigate the circumstances of Lacey's death, which is still being treated as unexplained.

"All four people who were previously arrested in connection with the investigation remain on conditional police bail at this time. Our enquiries are continuing and we will continue to provide updates on this investigation when we are able to do so."
