Wirral Estate in 'Horrible Situation' After Post Office Closure

An estate in Wirral has been left in a “horrible situation” after its Post Office closed temporarily, leaving elderly residents and local businesses struggling to access essential services. Arrowe Park Post Office in Woodchurch shut its doors on Monday, with Post Office Ltd citing “operational reasons” for the sudden closure.

Community Impact and Resident Concerns

Dave Kirsopp, 75, a long-time resident of Woodchurch, expressed his dismay at the closure. “I use it a lot and would be stuck without it. I pay my rent and gas bill in there,” he said. “It’s getting bad, with banks closing too. I’ve had to get the bus up to Birkenhead to pay money in there. I’ve heard it’s a temporary closure for a computer fault.”

Ricky Evans, 58, a taxi driver for Sevens Taxis and also a Woodchurch resident, highlighted the wider repercussions. “It’s so important for me. We’ve always used it to pay cash in for the business. Now there’s no Post Office on the estate. It’s especially important for senior citizens,” he said. “It’s a horrible situation at the moment. People are having to shell out for taxis out of the area.” Evans has been taking his elderly regular customers to the Post Office in Greasby at no extra cost to help alleviate the burden.

Pattern of Closures Across Merseyside

This latest closure follows a troubling trend. In November 2025, the Liverpool Echo reported that 10 Post Offices across Merseyside closed without warning, including branches in Allerton, Childwall, Walton, Woolton, Toxteth, Hunts Cross, Bootle, Formby, and the city centre. Parcels were trapped behind shutters, and some older people were unable to draw pensions as branches remained shut for almost two weeks. In both instances, the publicly-owned firm left customers without a proper explanation.

Alternative Branches and Business Continuity

The Arrowe Park Post Office is located inside a general shop, which remains open for retail. A Post Office spokesperson said: “Arrow Park Post Office has been temporarily closed since Monday due to operational reasons. We apologise for any inconvenience that this may cause customers. We are working hard to restore service as soon as possible. In the interim alternative branches include Greasby (1.64 miles away) and Prenton Dell (1.79 miles away).”

Despite the temporary nature of the closure, residents like Evans feel the community is being eroded. “I love this place [Woodchurch]. There are cracking people here, it’s a lovely estate, but things are closing all around us. It feels like there’s less and less here all the time,” he added.
