A person was hit by a train at Freshfield railway station this morning (Saturday, August 22). The incident is believed to have happened at around 10.40am, prompting a large emergency services presence at the station.

Services suspended and replacement buses arranged

Merseyrail services between Hillside and Hall Road on the Southport line were suspended, causing disruption and cancellations. Rail replacement buses were requested in both directions, and ticket acceptance was granted on Northern Rail services between Southport and Liverpool via Wigan. Passengers were also able to use bus services on the Arriva and Stagecoach X2 routes at no extra cost.

Services were originally suspended between Hillside and Hall Road, however Merseyrail also suspended services from Southport to Hall Road.

Alternative travel advised amid major events

Due to the Southport Flower Show and Everton’s opening home game of the Premier League season at the Hill Dickinson stadium, the train provider suggested people make alternative travel arrangements due to the limited train service on the Southport line.

The disruption on the line lasted until around 1pm with trains gradually returning to normal. The ECHO has contacted the British Transport Police for more information.
