An oil spillage on Balliol Road in Bootle has prompted road closures and lane restrictions on Monday, July 20, 2026. Sefton Council confirmed that specialist cleansing teams have been dispatched to the site to remove the hazardous material and ensure the road can be reopened safely as soon as possible.
Road Closures and Diversions
According to a Sefton Council spokesperson, lane closures are in effect on Derby Road, and the eastbound carriageway of Millers Bridge is closed. Motorists are strongly encouraged to seek alternative routes through Bootle until the clean-up operation is complete. The council said: “We are aware of a hazard on the highway on Balliol Road. … We encourage motorists to find alternative routes through Bootle until the carriageway is cleared.”

Sand is commonly used to absorb oil spills, restoring traction and making the road safe for vehicles. Once the oil is absorbed, the sand is swept up to prevent affecting braking distances.
Previous Incidents in Bootle
This is not the first time Bootle has experienced significant oil spillages. In 2023 and 2024, multiple spills occurred on Millers Bridge Road and Derby Road, causing disruptions lasting several days. In June 2024, a long stretch of Balliol Road from Derby Road to Breeze Hill was affected, with oil visible along nearly the entire carriageway. Police attributed that incident to a collision between a lorry and a car.
In June 2022, a spill of 2,000 gallons of vegetable oil on Millers Bridge led to severe delays and road closures for several days.
Council Response
Sefton Council has assured the public that teams are working diligently to clear the spill. The council spokesperson added: “We have dispatched our specialist cleansing teams to remove all materials to ensure the road is safe to reopen as soon as possible.” Motorists are advised to stay updated via local news and official council channels.
