Seven flights were diverted and around 17 held after a man got onto the airfield at Manchester Airport overnight. The incident lasted for around 15 minutes before he was taken to hospital from the scene.
Incident details
Just after 11.20pm on Friday, August 21, police were called to the airport after the man 'encroached' onto the airfield. A spokesperson for Manchester Airport said the incident was mental health-related.
During the disruption, seven flights due to land at Manchester Airport were diverted elsewhere, including an easyJet flight from Zurich, which was diverted to Birmingham, and a TUI flight from Naples, which was diverted to East Midlands.
Impact on flights
The airport spokesperson confirmed the incident was resolved, with flights now back to normal. A temporary fix has been put in place following the security breach. Around 17 flights due to land were held, which had a knock-on effect on arrivals, resulting in further delays.
