Loganair has confirmed it is ending all operations at Dundee Airport, which will leave the Scottish hub without any scheduled commercial routes. The airline cited the routes as "financially unsustainable," and services will cease on October 23.
All Routes Cancelled
The airline had previously announced the axing of its Dundee–London Heathrow service, effective October 23, but has now also confirmed the cancellation of its routes to Kirkwall Airport on Orkney and Sumburgh Airport on the Shetland Islands. These were the last remaining scheduled passenger services from the airport.
The Heathrow route operated under a public service obligation (PSO), supported by the local authority, Scottish, and UK governments. The PSO has been in place since 2014, initially run by ScotAirways to London City Airport before Loganair took over and rerouted it to Stansted and then Heathrow.
Service Details and Impact
The London route currently runs twice daily from Monday to Friday and once on Sunday, connecting Dundee to the capital in under two hours. The island services run twice weekly. Services were initially set to end September 28, but the airline has confirmed it will continue operations until October 23, with tickets available to book up to that date.
With the routes axed, Dundee Airport will have no scheduled commercial flights, operating private services only. Loganair has confirmed it will support Dundee-based employees in finding alternative roles.
The airport will remain open for charter and private flights. Its proximity to famous golf courses such as St Andrews makes it a busy hub during tournaments. Due to its short runway and location near the River Tay, it is unlikely to be suitable for budget airlines operating larger planes, restricting it mostly to regional routes.
Official Statement
In a statement, a Loganair spokesperson said: "Following a review of the route’s long-term viability, Loganair can confirm that its Dundee–London Heathrow service will cease after Friday 23 October, and the operating base will close."
The statement continued: "Earlier this year, we served notice to the stakeholder group behind the Public Service Obligation route after the contract became financially unsustainable. We have since explored alternative options but have not been able to identify a viable way forward that meets the objectives of the PSO while allowing the route to operate sustainably."
It went on to confirm: "Customers affected by the change will be contacted directly. We are also supporting Dundee-based colleagues and will explore alternative roles across the Loganair network wherever possible."
The airline added: "These decisions reflect the same disciplined, decisive approach that has driven previous improvements in Loganair's punctuality and resilience, protecting the long-term future of the airline, our people, and the lifeline connectivity we provide to communities across our network."
