Doncaster Sheffield Airport to Reopen by 2028, Survey Open Until June 30
Doncaster Sheffield Airport Reopening 2028 Survey Deadline June 30

Residents and future travellers have just weeks left to help shape plans for the return of a major UK airport. Doncaster Sheffield Airport is expected to reopen between late 2027 and summer 2028, and operators have launched a new survey asking future passengers what routes, destinations and services they want to see when flights return.

The survey, launched by airport operator FlyDoncaster Ltd in partnership with Munich Airport International, comes as discussions with airlines and other commercial partners continue. Questions cover everything from preferred holiday and business destinations to customer priorities when choosing an airport and expectations of the terminal experience.

Airport bosses say the responses will help strengthen the case for new routes and support ongoing negotiations with airline operators ahead of the planned reopening.

Christian Foster, director of FlyDoncaster Ltd, said: "We're in discussion with a number of airlines, and while we've proven the wider need and appetite for this airport reopening, this survey takes things to the next level in terms of understanding customer priorities. We've made a number of positive steps with regard to providers and routes, and having this data will help progress those conversations further as we firm up plans with our airline partners."

The survey takes around five minutes to complete and will remain open until June 30.

The latest update comes as Doncaster Sheffield Airport's revival continues to gather momentum following a major £160 million investment package backed by the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority and local councils.

The airport closed in November 2022 after the former owner, Peel Group, said it was no longer financially viable. Since then, regional leaders have mounted a campaign to bring commercial flights back to the site, arguing it is vital for jobs, investment and connectivity across South Yorkshire.

While there had initially been hopes of reopening passenger services in 2026, airport chiefs now expect flights to resume between late 2027 and summer 2028.

A series of major milestones have already been reached. FlyDoncaster Ltd has taken control of the site and is overseeing preparations for the return of commercial aviation, including discussions with potential airline partners and work on terminal facilities. The reopening project was also boosted by the approval of key funding packages, including a £57 million loan agreed by Doncaster Council and regional leaders to keep plans on track despite political disagreements over the scheme.

Supporters believe the airport could once again become a major gateway for travellers across Yorkshire, offering holiday and business routes while creating hundreds of jobs in the region.
