A British woman's dream holiday turned into a nightmare after a horror motorhome crash in Australia left her unable to walk. Emma Blood, 28, from Milton Keynes, was travelling in Western Australia when the collision left her trapped, seriously injured, and facing a year-long recovery.
The Crash
Emma had travelled to Australia on March 19, 2026, for a six-week trip. She teamed up with three women she met through a travel group and hired a motorhome. On March 29, while driving towards Margaret River, she lost control on mud roads and crashed into a tree. Two passengers had minor injuries, but Emma was trapped from the waist down and had to be cut free by firefighters.
Injuries and Surgery
Emma was airlifted to Perth Trauma Hospital, where doctors found her femur broken in three places. She underwent six hours of emergency surgery to insert an intramedullary nail with six screws. She spent 10 days in hospital before flying back to the UK on April 8, accompanied by her father.
Emma said: "I recall the moment of impact... I ended up trapped from the waist down." She also described standing for the first time after surgery as terrifying, as she had no control over her leg. Doctors initially feared spinal injuries, but those were ruled out.
Recovery at Home
Back in the UK, Emma was admitted to Milton Keynes Hospital for a week before continuing recovery at home. She could not move her leg without a strap and needed help with everyday tasks. Her brother, a sports physiotherapist, helped her progress from a walking frame to one crutch. She now spends time in the gym daily and recently drove a car again.
Emma said: "Driving again was huge for me... Although the accident cut short my dream trip, I will go back to finish it." She added that a full recovery could take up to a year, but she is making great progress.
