Bedford Train Crash: Driver Dead, Dozens Injured

Passengers on trains involved in a devastating collision near Bedford have recounted the horrifying moment two services crashed, with one sharing footage of the aftermath. The incident occurred at approximately 5:15 PM on Friday, June 19, when two East Midlands Railway (EMR) trains collided just south of the Elstow interchange between the A421 and the A6.

Details of the Collision

The services involved were the 4:40 PM from Corby to London St Pancras and the 3:50 PM from Nottingham to London St Pancras. The driver of one of the trains has been confirmed dead. Eleven people suffered very serious injuries, 22 were seriously injured, and a further 56 sustained minor injuries, bringing the total number of injured to 89.

Passenger Accounts

Dr. Peter Knapp, a passenger traveling in the front carriage of one of the trains, described the scene as reminiscent of a bomb explosion. He told the BBC: "When I got up, I saw all of the chairs everywhere. It felt like I'd been in a bomb explosion. I saw people's bloodied faces and people's legs looked broken and there was smoke everywhere." He added that some passengers were spitting out blood. Dr. Knapp captured footage showing passengers wailing in the aftermath.

Another passenger, Shola Mene, reported hearing a loud bang. She said: "People flew from their seats, the seats were pulling, and then someone just flew across and hit my husband in the face. There was a lot of blood. A lot of people had facial injuries."

Teresa Itabor, from Wellingborough, Northamptonshire, was traveling to London to celebrate her birthday. She recalled: "We left Bedford station and there was a massive bang... I didn't know what was going on. My head hit the seat in front of me. I opened my eyes and that's when I saw people on the floor with blood everywhere."

Emergency Response

Aerial footage of the aftermath shows the two damaged EMR trains, with most carriages on the tracks but at least one shunted off. Emergency responders were quickly on the scene, treating the injured and taking passenger details. Some passengers were taken to hospital for further treatment.

The cause of the crash is under investigation, and authorities are working to determine how such a catastrophic event occurred.
