Arriva warns passengers as Merseyside bus franchising begins

Arriva has warned passengers that it will stop operating bus services between Liverpool and St Helens from next month, as the Liverpool City Region brings buses back under public control. The franchising model gives the combined authority power to set fares and decide routes and timetables.

Which services are affected?

From September 6, Arriva will no longer run services including the 10/10A, 17, 20, 31, 32/32A, 33, 34/34A, 35, 37, 38/38A, 89, 320, 352 and 920. Stagecoach and Go North West will take on the routes, as confirmed by Mayor Steve Rotheram in January.

St Helens is the first of the six local authority areas to adopt the new services, with Wirral second. Sefton, Knowsley and Liverpool will be completed by September 2027.

Ticket validity and refunds

Arriva tickets will remain valid on the franchised network for a limited period. Weekly tickets are accepted until September 13, while four-weekly, term and annual tickets are accepted until October 5. After these dates, Arriva products will not be valid on any franchised services.

Passengers with valid Arriva tickets beyond these dates can apply for a refund online, based on days remaining. Requirements vary by ticket type: paper tickets need an image and postal address; M-Tickets need an email address and confirmation screenshot; Arriva Connect Smart Cards need the long card number and linked email.

Arriva Tap and Go fare capping will not be available on the new franchised network, but can still be used on Arriva services.
