Work on the new Birkenhead Market is finally set to begin in the coming days. Construction and fit out work is due to start at the former TJ Hughes in the town's Pyramids shopping centre.
The former discount department store in Birkenhead town centre will become the new home of the historic shopping market, which dates back to the 1830s. The move follows scuppered plans to move the market from Grange Precinct into the former Argos store on Princes Pavements.
Council Approves Pre-Construction Agreement
In late 2025, Wirral Council’s Economy, Regeneration and Housing Committee agreed to move market traders individually, or collectively, to refurbished units within the town centre, and then to demolish the existing market to make the site available for redevelopment.
In June, Wirral Council's Chief Executive approved the awarding of a Pre-Construction Services Agreement (PCSA) and enabling works to Krol Corlett Ltd, at a cost of £610,843. Work is now set to begin in the coming days.
Discussions with Traders Ongoing
The council said discussions with market traders are continuing as the plans for the new market are developed. The aim for the new site will be to maximise footfall and create a warm and welcoming environment for the public.
Leader of Wirral Council, Cllr Paula Basnett, said: “This marks the start of an exciting new chapter for Birkenhead Market, and for the town centre as a whole. A huge amount of work has been going on behind the scenes to get to this stage. I’m incredibly pleased that people will soon start to see a real transformation getting underway at the former TJ Hughes site to create the town’s new market.”
Contractor Praises Community Focus
Daniel Tebay, Managing Director, Krol Corlett Construction, said: “We're delighted to be working in partnership with Wirral Council on the Birkenhead Market project, which represents an important investment in the town's future. This development will help create a modern destination while respecting the market's rich heritage and its place at the heart of the local community. We're proud to play our part in bringing this exciting vision to life and delivering a project that will benefit traders, visitors and the wider Birkenhead area for many years to come.”
