York has been named the best UK city to visit in autumn, according to travel expert Hazel Rickett of small-group tour operator Rabbie's. The historic northern English city is praised for its cobbled streets, medieval architecture, and atmospheric charm as the season changes.
Why York is perfect for autumn
Rickett highlighted York's unique appeal during the cooler months. "There's something about York in autumn that's hard to put into words," she said. "As the temperature drops and the evenings grow darker, the city takes on a wonderfully atmospheric quality, with its narrow cobbled streets, ancient walls and glowing pub windows creating the perfect backdrop for a seasonal escape."
The city is home to Bishopthorpe Road, previously named the best high street in the UK for its independent shops, restaurants, cafes, and pubs. York also features the Shambles, a well-preserved medieval lane considered one of the best streets to explore in the country.
Top sights and experiences
Rickett described the Shambles as "a beautifully preserved medieval lane where timber-framed buildings lean in so closely that their upper floors almost meet." Once home to the city's butchers, it now hosts independent shops, cafes, and craft stores. She added: "Visitors can wander its winding cobbles, browse the boutiques and soak up the timeless atmosphere that feels especially magical on a crisp autumn afternoon."
She also recommended walking the Medieval City Walls, a roughly two-mile route around the historic centre. "Visitors can stroll the ramparts between the historic gateways, known as bars, and look out over the Minster, the rooftops and the surrounding countryside as the trees turn shades of amber and gold," she said.
Cosy pubs and spooky season
Autumn is also considered the best time to enjoy York's cosy pubs and tea rooms, as well as York Minster, the Gothic cathedral that towers over the city. Rickett called York a perfect destination for spooky season, noting the many ghost stories to be discovered there.
"Overall, York is a city that seems made for autumn," she said. "From the medieval charm of The Shambles to walks along the ancient walls and evenings spent in a cosy pub, it brings together history, atmosphere and warmth in a way few other UK cities can. For anyone looking to make the most of the season, it's a destination that truly comes alive once autumn arrives."
