A bag of crisps or a piece of fruit usually does the trick when you're feeling peckish between meals, but sometimes you might fancy something a bit meatier - and that's where the legendary Scotch egg comes in. A hard-boiled egg wrapped in sausage meat and coated in breadcrumbs before being baked or deep-fried - there are few things better. You might think you can't improve on perfection, but one Yorkshire business has done just that with its own spin on the classic. One man who tried the creation branded it "a revelation" and "one of the best things I've ever had".
Taylor Marin, who is from Arizona in the USA, and her husband Alex Morris, from Preston, Lancashire, regularly share content showing each other trying foods and other elements of their respective cultures. They recently shared a clip from a visit to the historic city of York, where they tried something which left them blown away. In the clip, shared on Instagram, the pair can be seen visiting Shambles Sausage and Pie Company, located on historic street The Shambles.
Speaking over a clip of some of the treats on display in the window, Alex says: "I'm in trouble here in Yorkshire, me." The clip then shows the pair seated at a picnic bench tucking into a mac and cheese pie. Taylor says: "I love that actually." Alex pokes fun at our Transatlantic friends, saying: "There's loads of Americans knocking about who've had mac and cheese all their life, but they've never actually used proper cheese, so they won't even know what it tastes like to have good cheese."
And then it was onto the main event - the York egg. This is the Shambles Sausage and Pie Company's own take on the legendary Scotch egg - with a tasty difference. It's still a hard-boiled egg wrapped in sausage meat, but instead of breadcrumbs, it's coated with bacon. Holding the sizeable treat up to the camera, Alex says: "Look at the state of that. How have I never heard of this?" He takes a bite, and says: "That's one of the best things I've ever had." Laughing, Taylor replies: "Seriously?"
Describing the product in a post on Instagram, the company said: "Our special 'York Egg' is proving very popular. Get one before they sell out. A golden hen's Scotch Egg wrapped in streaky bacon!" Alex continues: "Oh my God. This is a moment for the ages, this. Look at the egg trying to come out as well. It's a hard-boiled egg. If that had been a runny yolk that would have been a 12 out of ten." Taking a bit of the snack herself, Taylor says simply: "Oh wow." Alex adds: "If you've not been to York, get a York egg when you turn up. That's a revelation." Panning the camera to an unusual sight on his left, he adds: "And people next to us have parrots on their shoulders, so what more do you want?" Concluding, he says: "Every time I come to York I'll be having a York egg at that same gaff. Every single time. I'm never gonna come to York and not have a York egg."
People in the comments were amazed by the video, with many York folk saying they were amazed they hadn't heard of it before. One said: "I live in York and that's the first I've heard of it. Probably cus it's in tourist central! I'm checking that gaff out this weekend." Another said: "I live in York and have never heard of, or have had, a York Egg?! I will be having one now though!" And someone else wrote: "Lived in York all of my 35 years and only just finding out about this?! You guys are going to make this eight-months pregnant lady VERY happy when I get my hands on one." And someone else replied: "I've never heard of one but I can guarantee by this time tomorrow I'll have eaten one."
