Wigan's Stack venue in old Debenhams to open this month

Work is nearing completion on Stack Wigan, a 2,000-capacity entertainment venue set to open later this month in the former Debenhams store at the Grand Arcade shopping centre. The building, which closed in May 2021, will be transformed into a day-to-night venue with six street food kitchens, five bars, a coffee shop, a large stage and several giant screens.

Venue details and access

The 48,000 sq ft space will be accessible from the Grand Arcade, via a main entrance under an outdoor balcony, and from the nearby indoor car park. The upper level will include a pool table area and an outdoor terrace, while big screens will show major sporting matches and the live stage will host music, performances and events.

Stack has announced the final street food line-up, with outlets housed in shipping container-like units. The opening is described as bringing 'one of the town centre's biggest units back to life'.

Food traders and job creation

The six confirmed food traders are Pattersons, Acropolis, ZZA Pizzeria, Tikka Bros, Smash House and Hello Oriental, offering a range from fried chicken and Greek gyros to stonebaked pizza, Indian street food, smash burgers and pan-Asian favourites. Tikka Bros is a homegrown Wigan name, having opened its first outlet in the town centre before expanding to Southport Market.

The new complex will create around 140 jobs, giving Wigan a new day-to-night venue.

Statement from Stack

Gemma Dishman, director of strategy and development at Stack, said: "Independent street food is a big part of what makes STACK special, and we've brought together a strong mix of local talent and well-established food operators for Wigan.

"Each brings something different to the line-up, giving customers plenty of choice and the opportunity to discover new flavours alongside their favourites.

"Bringing the former Debenhams back to life is about more than filling an empty building.

"We're creating a place where people can come together for food, live entertainment and shared experiences, giving them more reasons to spend time in Wigan town centre. We're looking forward to welcoming everyone this November."
