Welsh Tourist Shocked by Cheap Tenerife Food Prices

A Welsh tourist who recently visited Tenerife was left floored by the significant price difference of food compared to eating out in Wales. Ruben Chorlton-Owen, 25, from North Wales, shared his travel story, highlighting how affordable dining was in the Canary Islands.

Social Media Influencer's Surprise

Ruben, a social media influencer with over 100,000 Instagram followers, went on a week-long holiday with his girlfriend. He noted that the cost of meals in Tenerife was dramatically lower than what he would pay back home. "We ate at a number of restaurants in Playa de las Americas, including Savoy Restaurant. The food was consistently excellent, with generous portions, friendly staff and great service," he said.

Price Comparison: Tenerife vs. Wales

At Savoy restaurant, they opted for a set menu for just €13.95 (approximately £11.93). The meal included starters, mains (with fillet steak available), desserts, and extra Chinese dishes. In contrast, Ruben noted that back in the UK, a single chicken chorizo linguine dish cost £23, nearly double the price of the entire three-course meal in Tenerife. "The difference was huge. A three-course meal in Tenerife cost less than what I'd often pay for a single main course in the UK," he added.

Overall Holiday Experience

Ruben emphasized that the value extended beyond just food. Breakfasts, coffees, drinks, and evening meals all felt noticeably cheaper, while the quality remained excellent. He described the holiday as "one of the best-value holidays" he has had, citing brilliant weather, relaxed atmosphere, beautiful beaches, and friendly locals. Highlights included visits to Siam Park and a boat trip.

Tips for Travelers

Ruben offered advice for making the most of a trip to Tenerife: "I'd definitely recommend exploring beyond your hotel and trying local restaurants rather than just sticking to the tourist hotspots. Compare menus before choosing somewhere to eat because there are some fantastic deals available. Tenerife has so much more to offer than just the beaches, so take the time to explore different parts of the island and support local businesses."
