A new survey has revealed that the United Kingdom is the most popular honeymoon destination for British newlyweds, surpassing exotic locations like the Maldives, Italy, and the United States. The study, conducted by Hyatt as part of their Vows & Venues research, polled 2,000 couples and found that 34% of British newlyweds chose a staycation honeymoon within the UK.
Why Britons Choose Staycations
Among those who honeymooned in the UK, nearly half (45%) cited good value as the primary reason. One in four (25%) wanted to avoid crowds, while 21% appreciated the shorter travel time. Additionally, 8% mentioned the lack of a language barrier as a deciding factor.
Top Honeymoon Destinations
The UK topped the list, followed by Italy (12%), Spain (8%), the Maldives (8%), and the USA (8%). France and Greece each garnered 4%, while St Lucia, South Africa, and Portugal tied at 2%.
Honeymoon Spending and Duration
According to the study, the ideal honeymoon lasts 13 days, with couples spending an average of £9,610. Michel Morauw, managing director of North EAME at Hyatt, noted that a honeymoon is often the first major trip for couples, making it a memorable experience. He emphasized that Hyatt aims to create lasting memories for newlyweds, regardless of location.
Preferred Hotel Features
When it comes to accommodation, 40% of couples prioritized all-inclusive options. Close proximity to the beach was important for 27%, while 19% valued a private pool or hot tub. Breakfast in bed (12%) and fine dining (10%) were also desired features.
Emerging Honeymoon Trends
The survey also highlighted new trends: 35% of couples are considering a “buddy moon,” where friends join the honeymoon. Half would consider an “early moon” (a pre-wedding getaway), and 47% are open to a “mini moon” or multi-location honeymoon.
