Syros has been named the island that is 'best for cuisine and charm' in 2026 in Expedia's Island Hot List, offering warm September weather and fewer tourists than better-known Greek destinations.
Warm weather and fewer crowds
In September, temperatures on Syros average between 25-27C, warm enough for beach days and outdoor dining. The warm weather continues into October, when temperatures drop to about 20-21C.
The team behind the Expedia study said: "Syros is emerging in 2026 as a compelling alternative to the region’s better-known islands, where standout cuisine, neoclassical elegance and authentic Greek charm come together without compromising depth or character."
Beaches and accommodation
Syros features golden sands and crystal waters, with Galissas being the most popular beach and holding a Blue Flag rating. Kini and Agathopes beaches are known for being livelier, with beachside bars.
Accommodation options include the 4-star Syrou Melathron from £132 a night and the Dolphin Bay Seaside Resort & Suites from £90 a night.
Culture and cuisine
Visitors can hike to St George's Cathedral, explore the old town and Miaouli Square, or walk through the waterfront Vaporia Quarter.
The island is known for its food, including San Michali cheese, often called the 'Parmesan of Greece', and loukoumi candy.
Getting there
From the UK, travellers can take a direct flight to Athens, with an average flight time of just under four hours. One-way fares from £69 are available in September on Skyscanner, with airlines including British Airways, easyJet and Ryanair.
From Athens, a connecting flight to Syros takes approximately 45 minutes, or a ferry journey takes between 2-4 hours depending on the route.
