Stirling Named Best UK Visit Destination, Surpassing Edinburgh
Stirling Named Best UK Visit Destination Over Edinburgh

The best place to visit in the UK has been named as an historic destination in Scotland, and it is not Edinburgh. Time Out has released a round-up of the best places to go in the UK in 2026, with the legendary city of Stirling claiming the top spot.

Why Stirling?

Found in central Scotland, Stirling is an interesting and picturesque destination famed for its extensive history. It is flanked by vast stretches of rich farmland, boasts a medieval old town, and features the impressive architectural gem, Stirling Castle, which sits on top of a craggy volcanic rock. The city's Old Bridge and port tie into its rich history, with other historic sites including the National Wallace Monument, a 19th-century tower at the summit of the Abbey Craig, and Stirling Old Town Jail.

History buffs will truly be in their element, especially those who choose to embark on the Bannockburn Experience, which uses cutting-edge technology to bring the 14th-century battle to life for 21st-century audiences. Guests can see the actual battlefield where it all happened more than 700 years ago.

What Else to See and Do

Stirling is renowned for being a compact, walkable city and is often branded the Heart of Scotland. Time Out highlighted several reasons to visit in 2026: Stirling Distillery, the city's first ever distillery, will release its first batch of Stirling whisky in late 2026. Independent venues will celebrate Stirling Cocktail Week with serious food and drinks deals all over the city. This year also marks the grand finale of the city's 900th anniversary celebrations, which had been ongoing since 2024, ending with a Culture Night of music, dance, comedy, and more at Stirling Castle.

Additionally, the launch of an affordable direct train service from London will make the city cheaper, easier, and more accessible to get to than ever.

Other Scottish Entries

Stirling was not the sole Scottish entry in the round-up. Edinburgh came in fourth place, and Caithness, found at the very top of mainland Scotland, took sixth place.
