St Andrews in Fife has been named one of the UK's prettiest towns for Christmas shopping, praised for its independent shops, vintage stores and festive atmosphere.
The Times unveiled its list of the seven "prettiest towns for Christmas shopping" across the UK in 2023, with St Andrews securing second place. The coastal town is primarily famous for its golf and university, but the publication said it is also a superb location for shopping and embracing the festive spirit.
What makes St Andrews special
St Andrews was praised for its array of vintage shops and bookshops, making it an ideal destination for buying gifts for relatives or friends who appreciate something more classic or traditional. The town also received praise for its whisky establishments, cashmere boutiques, and the variety of independent retailers stocking golfing merchandise.
After completing festive shopping, visitors can explore more of what St Andrews has to offer, including several Christmas events.
Christmas markets and events
One highlight is the Balgove Larder Christmas Night Market, taking place on Tuesday, December 1, from 4pm until 8pm. Entry is free, with visitors able to browse stalls from independent makers, local food and drink producers, as well as vintage sellers offering unusual Christmas gifts. The event will also feature festive treats including mulled wine and hot chocolate, while children can take part in Christmas card-making activities.
The Artisan Market at St Andrews Town Hall will take place on Saturday, December 5, between 10am and 4pm. The free event will feature handmade products including jewellery, ceramics, artwork, textiles and candles.
Independent shops in the town centre
The festive shopping continues in St Andrews town centre, which is home to a collection of independent shops and specialist retailers. Market Street and South Street are particularly good places to start, with plenty of unusual gifts and local treasures to discover.
One shop worth visiting is The Nutcracker Christmas Shop at 98 Market Street, which sells festive decorations, ornaments and seasonal keepsakes, including items inspired by St Andrews itself. Meanwhile, Artery St Andrews at 131 South Street stocks jewellery, artwork and unusual pieces, making it a good choice for anyone struggling to find a present for someone who seems to have everything.
