Slovenia hailed as 'underappreciated' European gem

Travellers are urging holidaymakers to consider Slovenia, a European destination just a two-hour flight from the UK, describing it as 'underappreciated' and 'seriously underrated'. The country offers glacial lakes, dramatic mountains, charming towns, and a capital hailed as the "best city in Europe" despite its overlooked status.

Why Slovenia Stands Out

Slovenia went viral earlier this year after a Reddit post by one traveller drew more than 42,000 votes and 900 comments in favour of the destination. The holidaymaker wrote: "I recently spent 4 days in Slovenia, and it completely exceeded my expectations. I was genuinely sad to leave by the end of it!"

They recalled being greeted by majestic mountains upon leaving Ljubljana Airport, affirming they had "picked the right destination." The traveller highlighted that Slovenia "punches way above its weight" and has a "really relaxed atmosphere that's difficult to describe until you're there."

Ljubljana and Lake Bled Highlights

Ljubljana, the capital, sits along the Ljubljanica River with a historic old town, ample green spaces, and a largely pedestrianised centre. In the post, the traveller said Ljubljana "quickly became one of my favourite city centres in Europe," praising its café and bar culture.

Lake Bled, in the Julian Alps of northwestern Slovenia, features glacial emerald-green waters, a tear-shaped island, and a medieval cliffside castle. The traveller said it can be seen as an "overpriced tourist trap" but declared it "absolutely worth it." From Bled, visitors can hike to the Ojstrica viewpoint for views over the lake and Slovenia's only natural island.

More to Explore and Winter Appeal

Other attractions include Postojna Cave, Predjama Castle, and Triglav National Park, an alpine landscape with turquoise waters, forests, and mountain peaks. The traveller was struck by how "friendly everyone was" and how the country "manages to combine incredible mountains, lakes and forests with beautiful towns and cities without feeling overrun."

One commenter wrote: "Slovenia is so underappreciated. Took family there last year and we all absolutely love it!" Another said: "Slovenia is basically a gem that needs not to be uncovered." A third added: "Slovenia is seriously underrated! I went a couple of years ago and fell in love with the vibe."

Lonely Planet named Slovenia one of the best places to visit in winter, citing "fall colours, fewer crowds and affordable prices." The publication suggested hikes around "cool lakes and through thick forests," kayaking along the Soča River, or exploring the Škocjan Caves. December offers scenic winter landscapes, snow-based activities, and Christmas markets, with the most popular held around Ljubljana, though temperatures can reach as low as 1C with an average of three hours of sunlight a day.

Direct flights operate from Manchester Airport to Ljubljana, taking two hours and 20 minutes, according to Skyscanner. In the city, a beer costs €2.50 (£2.08) and a meal ranges between €10 (£8.33) and €20 (£16.66) per person.
