Scotland's Oldest Family-Run Hotel Marks 250 Years

The George Hotel in Inveraray, Scotland's oldest family-owned and run hotel, is marking its 250th anniversary. The 24-bedroom coaching inn, set on the shores of Loch Fyne, offers a blend of historic charm, award-winning dining, and Highland scenery.

A Historic Milestone

Welcoming guests since 1776, the hotel celebrated its 250th anniversary earlier this year. In 2025, it was taken over by new owners Charlie Maclachlan and Sam Wignell after going into administration, and they have continued its long tradition of Scottish hospitality.

The building dates back to 1770, when two private houses were merged. Six years later, the 5th Duke of Argyll ordered the ground floors to be converted into churches for Gaelic and English-speaking congregations. These spaces now house the hotel's bar and lounge.

The hotel offers award-winning dining and a selection of more than 500 whiskies, with menus showcasing local produce. Its location makes it a base for exploring Inveraray, with Inveraray Castle minutes away and Loch Fyne on the doorstep.
