Robbie Keane could still become Celtic manager in the future, despite Martin O'Neill being appointed as permanent boss, according to reports. The Irish striker, who spent six months on loan at Celtic from Tottenham in 2010, had emerged as the frontrunner to succeed O'Neill after talks with the Scottish champions.
O'Neill Returns to Celtic Park
Veteran manager Martin O'Neill, 74, signed a one-year contract after leading Celtic to the Premiership and Scottish Cup double last season. He held discussions with majority shareholder Dermot Desmond, ultimately deciding to remain in charge. This decision put plans for Keane's appointment on hold.
Keane's Future Prospects
The Irish Independent reports that Keane was aware O'Neill had first refusal on the job. However, there is a "strong chance" he could become Celtic boss in the future. Club chiefs had envisioned O'Neill moving into an advisory role, with Keane taking over as head coach, but O'Neill's decision to stay scuppered that arrangement.
Keane is said to be "relaxed" about the deal falling through, and the report adds that it was "no surprise" O'Neill wanted to continue. Despite a furious backlash from some Celtic supporters due to Keane's controversial stint managing Maccabi Tel Aviv in Israel, where he won the 2023/24 title, the report claims fan anger was "categorically not the reason" he failed to land the role.
Open to Other Offers
Keane remains "open" to other management opportunities this summer. He recently featured in a Liverpool legends match against Barcelona in South Korea. The 43-year-old is reportedly relaxed about his future and willing to wait for the right opportunity.
Meanwhile, Celtic fans have expressed mixed reactions to O'Neill's return, with some questioning the club's long-term planning. However, the hierarchy appears committed to a smooth transition, with Keane still very much in their thoughts for the future.
