A new walking trail, the Petworth Way, has been launched in the South Downs National Park, offering a 25-mile route through historic estates, welcoming inns, and spectacular views. The trail is divided into two legs: from Haslemere to Petworth, and from Petworth to Arundel, both accessible by rail, allowing walkers to leave cars at home.
The first leg begins in Haslemere, ascending through woodland and heathland to Black Down, the highest point in the South Downs. Highlights include the Temple of the Winds viewpoint, which offers panoramic views of Sussex. The route passes the Noah's Ark pub in Lurgashall before finishing at Petworth House's great park.
The second leg starts in Petworth Park, crossing the Sussex Weald and briefly joining the Serpent Trail. It passes Burton Park, a Greek revival mansion, before heading through the villages of Barlavington and Sutton. The trail ends in Arundel, with the White Horse Inn noted as a potential refreshment stop, though it is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.
The trail is described as perfect for a weekend getaway, with plenty of pubs along the way. Walkers are advised to carry detailed printed instructions and water, as mobile signal can be unreliable in some areas.
