More Brits Have Seen Eiffel Tower Than Top UK Landmarks

A survey of 2,000 adults has revealed that more Britons have visited the Eiffel Tower than some of the UK's most iconic landmarks. The research, commissioned by Railcard.co.uk, found that 55% of people have seen the Eiffel Tower, compared to 54% who have visited the Tower of London, 53% Tower Bridge, and 52% Trafalgar Square.

Overseas Monuments More Recognisable

The study also showed that Brits are more likely to recognise overseas monuments. Over three-quarters (78%) could name the Eiffel Tower, 71% the Leaning Tower of Pisa, and 61% Rome's Colosseum. In contrast, fewer could identify St Paul's Cathedral (58%), Westminster Abbey (53%), and Edinburgh Castle (52%).

Sand Sculpture Unveiled on Blackpool Promenade

To highlight British landmarks, Railcard.co.uk collaborated with 'Sand in Your Eye' to create a sand sculpture featuring attractions from across Britain. The sculpture, made from 12 tonnes of sand and taking three days to complete, was unveiled on Blackpool promenade and will remain on display until the weekend. It showcases the top attractions on Brits' wish lists: Tower of London (22%), Edinburgh Castle (18%), Stonehenge (18%), Eden Project (18%), and Loch Ness (18%).

Encouraging Exploration of British Landmarks

Catherine Lyver from Railcard.co.uk said: "It's easy to overlook the iconic landmarks and hidden gems on our doorstep, yet Great Britain is full of incredible places to explore. We're encouraging people to do a third more with their break, making it simpler and more budget-friendly to tick off some of the bucket-list-worthy destinations closer to home."

The survey, conducted by OnePoll.com, found that 79% of people would like to explore more British landmarks, but the cost of living (43%) and lack of time (33%) are the main barriers. Among those who visit British landmarks by train (23%), reasons include it being relaxing (59%), more convenient (46%), and avoiding parking worries (43%).
