Luxembourg has been named Europe's fastest-growing autumn destination, according to Expedia's Autumn Outlook Report. Interest from British travellers has surged by 470%, with many seeking city breaks away from peak-season crowds.
Weather and attractions
While the weather may not be as sunny as in Spain or Portugal, visitors can still expect average temperatures of up to 20C until October, dropping to about 7C by November. Both months see some rainfall, so packing layers is advised.
The city offers a mix of indoor and outdoor attractions. The Bock Casemates fortifications, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, feature winding underground tunnels with carvings dating back to 1644. Museums, restaurants, and cafes provide shelter from rain, while the Old Town's historic fortifications, shops, and cobbled streets are worth exploring on sunnier days.
Budget-friendly travel
Autumn can be a cost-effective time to visit. Skyscanner lists flights from £26 each way in September, £31 in October, and £36 in November. Flight times from the UK range from 1hr15 to 1hr45 depending on the departure airport.
Hotel rates start from £77 a night in Luxembourg City with Expedia, and TripAdvisor offers a round-up of the top 10 rated hotels based on visitor reviews.
Other emerging destinations
Expedia's report also highlighted other off-the-beaten-track destinations, including Sarandë in Albania (+110%), Budva in Montenegro (+85%), and Ljubljana in Slovenia (+80%). The team behind the study said this is "suggesting that many travellers are prioritising discovery over familiarity when choosing where to go".
