Gorse Hall Park in Stalybridge offers an atmospheric autumn walk with woodland trails, panoramic views, and ruins that hide a gruesome past. The 35-acre site, now a peaceful mix of meadow and woods, was once home to two grand halls and the scene of a brutal murder in 1909.
A Landscape Steeped in History
The land was part of Dockenfeld Manor, held by Lieutenant-Colonel Robert Duckenfield, a Parliamentarian soldier in the English Civil War. The original Old Gorse Hall dates back to the 17th century, though it is believed to be even older. Its ruins remain visible and open for visitors to explore.
The estate later passed to Francis Dunkinfield Astley, who built Hunters Tower in 1807 and helped create the Astley Riflemen Volunteers; the rifle range wall can still be seen. Cotton manufacturer John Leech purchased part of the land for mill construction, and his son, also John, built the ‘New’ Gorse Hall in 1835-36, complete with formal gardens, an orchard, and a bowling green.
The Murder of George Harry Storrs
After the death of John’s wife Jane, the hall was bought by William Storrs as a wedding present for his son George Harry Storrs. On November 1, 1909, George was murdered by an intruder who stabbed him 16 times. Two men, Cornelius Howard and Mark Wilde, were tried but found innocent, and the killer’s identity has remained a mystery ever since.
George’s widow had the house demolished in 1910 and left permanently. Following a Heritage Lottery Grant, the site was opened to the public and is now managed by Friends of Gorse Hall, established in 1999, with the land owned by Tameside Metropolitan Borough Council.
Heritage Trails to Explore
Despite its gory history, Gorse Hall is popular with walkers. The site features three dedicated heritage routes, all starting at the main entrance next to Macaculey Close: the yellow trail (one mile) covers the sites of both halls, the red trail (one and a quarter miles) takes in the old kitchen gardens, and the blue trail (just under two miles) leads to the edges of the site, including Hunters Tower and viewpoints.
