A 19-year-old British student has died in Barcelona after an apparent accidental fall into the sea, according to Spanish authorities. The incident occurred during what is believed to be a gap year trip to the Catalan capital.
The student, whose name has not been released, was reported missing after he failed to return to his accommodation following a night out. His body was recovered from the water near a beach close to a popular nightclub area.
Police in Barcelona stated that all evidence points to an accidental death. Surveillance footage reportedly showed the student walking alone towards a dock before falling into the water, with no third-party involvement. An autopsy revealed injuries consistent with striking rocks on a breakwater.
The student's family has been informed and are being supported by consular officials. A spokesperson for the Foreign Office said: 'We are providing consular assistance to the family of a British man who has died in Spain.'
