Brighton has been named the UK's fish and chip capital, with 84 chip shops and restaurants serving the classic seaside meal, according to a new index.
The Great British Coastal Resort Index from GJW Direct analysed 50 of the UK's most popular seaside resorts. Researchers used 10 classic staycation factors, including the number of restaurants serving fish and chips along with takeaways listed on TripAdvisor, to reveal the top destinations.
Top seaside resorts ranked
Southend-on-Sea took second place with 79 options, while Blackpool came third with 75 venues. Scarborough followed with 72, and Whitby rounded out the top five with 69.
Other resorts in the top 10 include Weymouth with 53, Bournemouth with 52, Hastings with 50, Great Yarmouth with 49, and Llandudno with 43.
Chip shops under pressure
The news comes as chip shops face threats due to the conflict in the Middle East. Molly Monks, insolvency specialist at Parker Walsh, said small independent food businesses are often the first to feel the pressure when global economic shocks hit.
Monks added that chippies are particularly exposed because they rely heavily on energy-intensive cooking, through refrigeration and fryers, and frequent deliveries of fresh ingredients, requiring transport.
