Alnmouth, a picturesque estuary village in Northumberland, has been named a 2026 'must visit' destination by travel specialists Ski Vertigo. The village ranked sixth in a countdown of the best UK seaside places to visit this year, based on ratings from Time Out magazine.
Why Alnmouth is a Top Tourist Destination
Situated at the mouth of the River Aln, Alnmouth offers breath-taking views of the Northumberland coast and a stunning sandy beach. It is also perfectly located for exploring the surrounding areas, making it a top tourist destination providing an exceptional quality of life.
The village is home to a range of five-star reviewed local pubs, restaurants, and cafes, including The Red Lion Inn, Bistro 23, and The Sun Inn. It also boasts a delicatessen and gift shop. Alnmouth offers great transport links, with a half-hour train journey to Newcastle Central Station and connections beyond to London or Edinburgh. The village is around 35 miles, or 50 minutes, from Newcastle by road.
Attractions and History
The charming pastel houses of Lovaine Terrace sit on one of the most photographed streets in the North East. Built by the Duke of Northumberland around 1860, these easily recognised houses are located in a special Conservation area and have been captured in paintings by local artists for years. With prime sunset viewing, the pretty coloured houses have become an attraction in themselves.
Another breath-taking sight is the stunning beach, visible from trains journeying on the East Coast Main Line. The beach sits on a wide sandy bay at the mouth of the River Aln and is dog friendly all year round.
The village was once home to an important harbour, but this changed after the devastating storm of Christmas Eve 1806. The storm redirected the course of the river, leaving Alnmouth's harbour stranded and historic Church Hill cut off. Only accessible by long walk or at low tide, the scenic and isolated grassy mound is marked by St Cuthbert's Cross and the ruins of a chapel.
Although the ferry no longer runs, the Ferryman's Hut remains and is now possibly one of the smallest Heritage Museums in the UK. It has attracted visitors from all over the world. Though essentially an adapted garden shed, it was once where Alnmouth ferrymen kept their equipment when taxiing people from one side of the Aln Estuary to the other, from the early 1900s until the late 60s. It is now home to photographs and exhibits bringing this past to life. Speaking to ChronicleLive in 2022, custodian Donald Blythe opens and locks the hut every day on walks with his dog. He took over from artist Judi Hill, who revitalised the hut when it was falling into disrepair.
Activities and Property
Alnmouth is also home to a wide range of activities, including a Community Rowing Association, the popular Alnmouth Golf Club established in 1869 (the 4th oldest in England), and Alnmouth and Lesbury Cricket Club, founded in 1861 and steeped in history.
Property in the coastal village is highly sought-after. In 2024 it was dubbed the 'most stylish' place to live in Northumberland, ranked according to beauty of buildings and scenery. House prices in Alnmouth range from £221,000 to £900,000 over the last three years, with an overall average of £566,833 over the last year, according to Rightmove.
