The UK government has announced a £1.3 billion investment to support the development of the Universal United Kingdom Resort, a £7.3 billion theme park and entertainment complex in Bedfordshire. The project, which includes plans for 20,000 new homes, is expected to become the UK's most popular tourist attraction, drawing millions of visitors annually.
Comcast NBCUniversal will invest over £5 billion during the estimated five-year construction period, with an additional £1 billion in capital investment over the first decade of operation. The resort is projected to generate nearly £50 billion in economic benefit for the UK by 2055 and create 20,000 construction jobs, followed by 8,000 permanent roles when it opens in 2031.
Chancellor Rachel Reeves visited the site on Wednesday, meeting workers and Universal executives. She stated: 'Thank you for choosing the UK. We're really thrilled you're going to be here and we're determined to work with you to make it the massive success that I know it's going to be.'
The government's £1.3 billion package includes a £400 million grant from the Exceptional Regional Growth Fund, a £438 million grant from the Department for Culture, Media and Sport for community infrastructure, and £474 million for upgrades to the A421 road and Wixams railway station. These funds will be disbursed after Universal completes the infrastructure and opens the resort.
Universal Destinations & Experiences chairman Mark Woodbury said the company was 'ready to break ground and make this the most spectacular theme park in all of Europe, if not the world.' The resort's name and logo were unveiled at 11 Downing Street following the Chancellor's visit.
