Woman finds 20-year-old photos in eBay camera

A woman who bought a retro camera on eBay got a surprise when she turned it on and found a roll of film still inside. After having the pictures developed, she saw a glimpse into a night out in Leeds from the early 2000s.

Discovery and search for owners

The shopper, based in Berlin, Germany, ordered the camera from eBay and was amazed to find the film. Keen to return the photos to their rightful owners, she reached out to Matt Tighe, a content creator from Austin, Texas.

Since the beginning of 2024, Matt has been passionate about returning lost photos, postcards, video tapes, matchbooks and other memories to their owners, documenting his efforts on his TikTok page. Speaking to Newsweek, he said: “I’ve always been a thrift store explorer and was always captivated by the random photos I’d find. I always felt terrible about them being abandoned and would jokingly say I’d return them. One day, I decided to actually try to, and it worked.”

Dating the photos

Matt explained: “The camera was bought off eBay from a camera collector in the UK and was a Canon IX240 film camera. I tried to date the photos using various clues, but couldn’t find too much. What I could find was that these photos had to have been taken after 1996, because that's when the Canon IX240 was released. This made sense because the photos looked like they were from the late 1990s or early 2000s. I then noticed a camera in one of the photos, which was a Canon PowerShot S50 that was released in 2003. I then knew these photos were from 2003 or 2004.”

Struggling to find another lead, Matt posted the photos on TikTok, and the clip compilation went viral, racking up more than 150,000 views. Then, the women in the photos started commenting on Matt’s post, expressing their excitement that their photos had been found.

Reunion with the past

One of the women was Victoria Leeson, a psychotherapist and poet living in the north of England. Fifteen years ago, she was working in the film and television industry. Victoria told Newsweek: “These pictures were taken around 2003 or 2004 at a city centre restaurant in Leeds. From memory, this was an end of production celebration/wrap party for a Channel 4 series we had all been working on.”

The photos brought back many memories. She continued: “I felt very nostalgic seeing the pictures, especially as I realised these pictures captured a time very shortly before my dad had unexpectedly died of cancer. It felt like a glimpse into life ’before’ and also a career that I left behind many years ago. It was great to be reunited with familiar faces and see how much fun we were having in the pics. Life in my 20s felt like a much simpler time.”

Matt has reunited the pictures with their rightful owners.
