Samsung unveils Galaxy Z Fold 8, challenging Apple

Samsung has officially unveiled three new foldable smartphones, including the all-new Galaxy Z Fold 8, which features a passport-like design. The device is now available for pre-order starting at £1,699.

Design and Display

The Galaxy Z Fold 8 adopts a shorter and wider form factor, resembling a passport. When unfolded, it offers a 7.6-inch screen that functions like a traditional tablet, ideal for streaming and gaming. Samsung says this is its thinnest and lightest foldable yet, weighing just 180g.

The phone includes a Flex Titanium hinge for improved durability, Vision Booster technology, and an anti-reflective coating for better visibility in bright light. Gorilla Glass protects against cracks and scratches.

Performance and Camera

Under the hood, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 is powered by a Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 processor. It features a dual-lens rear camera and a 4800mAh battery that can fast charge from 0 to 63 percent in 30 minutes. The device also includes Galaxy AI features for photo editing and organization.

Other Models: Z Fold 8 Ultra and Z Flip 8

Samsung also refreshed the Z Fold 7, now called the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra. It has a similar design but upgrades to a Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chip, a 200MP main camera, 50MP ultrawide, and 10MP telephoto lens. It offers 8K video recording and a 5000mAh battery that charges to 67 percent in 30 minutes. The Z Fold 8 Ultra costs £1,899.

The Galaxy Z Flip 8 retains its clamshell design, now weighing 180g (down from 188g). It features an improved cover screen, advanced aluminium hinge, and enhanced camera capabilities including a super steady mode with horizontal lock. The Z Flip 8 starts at £1,149.

Apple Competition

Apple is rumored to be planning its first foldable iPhone, possibly launching later this year with a similar passport-style design. Reports suggest it could cost over £2,000. Samsung's early move with the Z Fold 8 puts it ahead in the foldable market.
