Samsung has unveiled its next-generation foldable phones, headlined by the Galaxy Z Fold 8, which features a completely redesigned look. Unlike previous models with a tall cover screen and square main panel, Samsung has adopted a shorter, wider "passport-style" design. When unfolded, the 7.6-inch display feels like a compact tablet, ideal for streaming, gaming, and more.
This launch is significant because Apple is widely expected to unveil its first foldable iPhone later this year, with reports suggesting it will also opt for this radical new look. Samsung has already stolen a march on its biggest rival.
Thinner, Lighter, and More Durable
The Galaxy Z Fold 8 is Samsung's thinnest and lightest Fold yet, weighing just 180g. It features an improved hinge for greater durability. The display gains Vision Booster technology and an anti-reflective coating for better visibility in bright sunshine. Power comes from Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 processor, backed by a 4,800mAh battery that charges from empty to 63% in 30 minutes. A dual-camera system offers decent photography, while Gorilla Glass protects against scratches. Samsung's latest Galaxy AI tools provide smarter photo editing, productivity features, and improved search capabilities.
The Galaxy Z Fold 8 starts from £1,699 and is available for pre-order now. By comparison, Apple's rumored foldable iPhone isn't expected until later this year and could reportedly cost more than £2,000.
Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra and Flip 8
Samsung also launched the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, which looks similar to last year's Fold 7 but receives a Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chip and a major camera upgrade: a 200MP main sensor, 50MP ultra-wide lens, and 10MP telephoto camera, with improved low-light photography and 8K video recording. It adopts a new Flex Titanium hinge and redesigned display structure that reduces the crease and makes unfolding smoother. A larger 5,000mAh battery reaches 67% charge in 30 minutes. The Fold 8 Ultra starts from £1,899.
The Galaxy Z Flip 8 sticks with the clamshell design but becomes thinner and lighter. It features an improved external cover display, stronger aluminum hinge, faster performance, and enhanced camera features. It starts from £1,149.
