MSP Clare Adamson has praised the expansion of public electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure in North Lanarkshire, where new figures show 583 operational charge points. Across Scotland, the total has reached 12,672 public charging devices, the highest per capita of any UK nation.
Scotland Achieves 2026 Target Two Years Early
In 2024, Scotland surpassed its goal of installing more than 6,000 public EV charge points, reaching the milestone two years ahead of the 2026 deadline. The Scottish Government continues to invest in sustainable travel infrastructure to make EV charging accessible to all residents.
MSP Welcomes Local Progress
Ms Adamson, the MSP for Motherwell and Wishaw, said: “I welcome the news that there are now 583 public electric vehicle charging points working in North Lanarkshire. On the back of scrapping peak rail fares on Scotland’s trains, this is further evidence of the SNP Government’s commitment to making sustainable travel accessible for everyone in Scotland.” She added: “I will continue to work with local businesses and private charge point providers to secure more investment here so that we can maintain this progress and deliver more public charge points here in North Lanarkshire.”
Leading the UK in Charger Density
Scotland now has the highest number of public charging devices per head of population of any UK nation. The government aims to build on this momentum by fast-tracking EV infrastructure, which Ms Adamson described as “paving the way for a more environmentally friendly Scotland.”
