Hoover's £69 mattress vacuum sucks up 'astonishing' dust and dirt

Hoover's HMC5 4-in-1 Corded Handheld UV Mattress Vacuum Cleaner is currently on sale for £69 when using the code REACH10-HMC5, down from its original price of £119.99. The device is designed specifically for soft furnishings, including mattresses, sofas, cushions, and pet beds, rather than as a conventional floor vacuum.

The compact Hoover combines four cleaning functions: a motorised roller, powerful suction, UV-C light, and 50°C hot air. Its Beat and Roll technology features a motorised roller that rotates at 4,200 rpm to lift dust and debris from fabrics without damaging delicate materials. The UV-C light is designed to help reduce bacteria, allergens, and dust mites, while the hot-air function assists in drying the mattress and reducing moisture build-up, according to the Liverpool Echo.

Shopper reactions

The vacuum cleaner has been called a 'game changer' by shoppers. One customer who bought it from Amazon described it as an 'amazing little machine', saying: "This is a brilliant little mattress Hoover. I was surprised, delighted and disgusted all at the same time. To know what I was sleeping on gives me the chills. I pride myself on cleanliness and used to use just my vacuum to do my mattress, so I assumed it was clean. The amount of dust and whatever else that little machine picked up was astonishing."

Another called it a 'complete game changer', adding: "Exceptionally pleased with this and does exactly what it says. Couldn't believe my eyes at what came out, absolutely disgusting, and to think I've been lying in all that." A third remarked: "This is an amazing product and I can't fault it. The amount of dust and skin flakes I have collected from the 'clean' mattress topper and pillows is unthinkable."

Features and maintenance

Weighing 2.22kg and fitted with a five-metre power cable, it can be used across a large mattress without constantly changing sockets. It features a 0.6-litre dust container which can be detached and emptied when required. Hoover advises rinsing the container, filters, and separation mechanism under running water regularly to maintain cleanliness and hygiene.

Alternatives and drawbacks

Some purchasers did knock off stars, however, with one commenting: "Works well, however, it uses a drive belt rather than a gear system. This means that cleaning the wheel is not easy. I also found that if you have a pet it very easily becomes clogged. Also there is no on board cable storage." Another cleaner said: "The vacuum is ergonomically designed and feels comfortable to grip and manoeuvre. I didn't realise when ordering but it's not just for mattresses; you can use it on other things like fabric sofas and chairs too. You can see the results straight away in the container, it's not at all cumbersome to use and hassle-free to empty and clean too. I think it's exceeded my expectations - and feels like an important essential to have in our home."

There are alternative cleaning devices shoppers might find worth considering. The VonHaus 500W 14kPa UV Mattress Vacuum Cleaner is available from Argos for £59.99, employing UV light, 14kPa suction, a tapping mechanism, and heat up to 55°C. At Amazon, the Ewbank Mattress Vacuum Cleaner and Bed Beater is on offer for £52.99, using UV light to target dust and allergens.
