The new Fairphone Gen 6+ smartphone is designed to let owners fix common issues at home, thanks to 12 easily replaceable parts. The ethical tech firm's latest model aims to cut the cost of repairs and extend the device's lifespan.
The Gen 6+ features a bold new look, a 6.31-inch screen, and a Snapdragon 7s Gen 4 processor. Its design includes parts that can be swapped out by the user, such as the battery, display, main camera, USB-C port, and SIM tray.
DIY repairs reduce costs and boost longevity
This approach means that when something goes wrong, the phone can be fixed at home rather than being sent to a repair shop. It reduces the cost for the user and increases the device's longevity.
Other hardware features include fast charging, an IP55 water resistance rating, durable Gorilla Glass, and a customizable side switch button for quick access to favourite features. The phone comes in three colours, including Cobalt Blue and Forest Green.
Privacy-focused software from Murena
Fairphone also highlights a strong focus on privacy. The Gen 6+ runs Google's Android through the Murena /e/OS operating system, which is designed not to collect user data. Its Advanced Privacy tools give owners greater control over the information third-party apps can access.
“Together, Murena and Fairphone are offering the everyday consumer something they haven’t had in the smartphone market in the past – freedom of choice,” says Gaël Duval, founder and CEO of Murena. "With devices like Fairphone (Gen. 6+) with /e/OS, users can have a truly ethical device both in terms of hardware and software. When I developed Mandriva Linux back in the 90s, it was my mission to make the operating system usable for the everyday, non-techie user. This is my goal with Murena – to give the average user access to smartphones that do not hold their privacy to ransom.”
Pricing and availability
Sold on Murena's website, the new Fairphone (Gen. 6+) with Murena's /e/OS costs £599, USA $699.
