Persistent injury issues limited Stones to only nine Premier League appearances last season, but his quality remained evident as England manager Thomas Tuchel retained him as a key figure during the World Cup campaign. The centre-back started three matches in the tournament, including the quarter-final victory over Norway and the semi-final defeat to Argentina. He also came off the bench in the dramatic last-16 win against Mexico at the Azteca.
Now available on a free transfer, Stones has attracted interest from several top clubs. According to The Athletic, Chelsea have added the former Barnsley man to their list of centre-back targets this summer as part of Xabi Alonso's squad overhaul.
Chelsea's Summer Transfer Activity
The Blues have already made significant moves in the transfer market. Marco Palestra arrived in a £43 million deal from Atalanta, but that signing will be overshadowed by the £117 million agreement to sign Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa. The England midfielder chose Chelsea over Arsenal and other suitors.
