Barmouth Named Most Independent Welsh Seaside Town
Barmouth: Wales' Most Independent Seaside Town

Barmouth, a Welsh seaside town, has been identified as the only coastal destination in a new study where every café and pub is independently run. The research, conducted by Simply Sea Views, analysed 50 seaside locations to determine which had the highest proportion of locally owned shops, cafés, restaurants and pubs.

Barmouth's Independent Streak

While Falmouth took the top spot, with St Ives and Whitby following closely behind, Barmouth clinched sixth place. The study examined the percentage of shops, cafés, restaurants and pubs under local ownership across each location, factoring in customer reviews and the proportion of independent businesses.

The research analysed over 20,000 individual establishments across the country, awarding each town a score out of 100. Barmouth garnered an overall score of 79.1, attributed to its remarkable concentration of independent traders.

Pubs and Cafés

Barmouth boasts an abundance of independently-run pubs. Barmouth Bar and Grill stands out as a particularly well-loved venue, with visitors describing it as a "lovely place" staffed by "friendly and helpful" people.

A brief walk leads to Myrddin's Tap, while just round the corner lies The Last Inn, so called because it marks either the beginning or end of the town's pub trail, depending on which way you're heading. The traditional Tal Y Don Hotel, located closest to the railway station, enjoys popularity amongst local guests. One visitor remarked in a Google review: "Great little Welsh pub. Exactly as you'd imagine: great selection of drinks, good food, dog friendly. Nice to sit outside and have a drink, but also inside is nice and cosy."

Cafés form an integral part of any seaside town, and Barmouth delivers with numerous waterfront establishments. With an outstanding 4.3-star Google rating, Goodies has established itself as a must-visit for coffee lovers and admirers of their celebrated cakes. One patron shared their thoughts: "Definitely the nicest café in Barmouth. Good coffee, excellent cakes and a really good café food menu. Light, airy decor with comfortable chairs and plenty of space - you never feel crowded. I come here every time I'm in Barmouth, and it never disappoints."

Beyond Dining

Unassuming yet delightful, Bath House Cafe sits at the corner boasting panoramic ocean vistas, providing the perfect setting to savour a drink in the sun. Their offerings encompass burgers, mussels, waffles and a carefully chosen range of beer and cider.

The main thoroughfare running through the town's centre is home to Bradshaw's Coffee, Richmond Coffee Shop, The Lunchbox and Wendy's Café, among countless other destinations for culinary devotees. Beyond the dining establishments, independence thrives throughout the town. There's an abundance of independent retailers stocking homeware, gifts, books and fashion - perfect for securing a unique memento unavailable elsewhere.
