Valente's cafe in Seaham, County Durham, will close its doors for the final time on Saturday, bringing an end to 106 years of serving the local community. The owners announced the closure earlier this year, and the final day of business is expected to be an emotional one as customers visit for one last coffee and bite to eat.
A Century of Family Business
The cafe has been a family-run business for over a century, serving generations of the same families. In a statement shared on Facebook, the owners said: "It hasn't been easy decision with it been a family led business for over 100 years. Over the years many people have become more than just customers and it has taken a lot of thought and consideration for Sue (Dagan) to walk away from all she has ever know after working in the business since the age of 13."
Valente's has remained a staple of Seaham's food and drink scene, having weathered the Covid pandemic. Regulars have expressed their sadness at the closure, with many taking to social media to share their memories.
Final Days and Customer Reactions
In a statement posted earlier this week, Valente's said: "It's all becoming so real knowing we are in the final 7 days of Valentes. Our open days are as usual next week- Monday, Tuesday, Friday, Saturday, we are expecting it to be a crazy, emotional day on Saturday the 29th and have decided we will not be selling breakfasts on the final day."
The statement continued: "The rest of the menu will be as normal, this will allow Sue a bit more time to speak to people in between preparing orders. Breakfasts are still available until close next Friday, we hope to see all of you over our final week of business. Once again, thank you for all of your support and kind words. Valentes- 106 years celebrating family, friendship and success."
Customers have responded with heartfelt comments, with one writing: "Will be a sad day for Sue and the girls. My late husband and I had hundreds of lovely bacon stotties in here over the years. Best of luck for the future." Another added: "Wish you all of the luck in the world. Church street just isn’t the same anymore."
Building Sold
At the end of last month, it was confirmed that the Valente's building had been sold. Local residents are now wondering what the property will be turned into.
