Tynemouth has been named the second cheapest coastal town in the UK for an ice cream, according to research by credit card company Zable. The North Tyneside seaside spot offers a single scoop for an average of £2.28, making it a wallet-friendly destination for families and day-trippers alike.
Average Prices and Family Costs
The average price of a single scoop in Tynemouth is £2.28, which means a family of four would spend £9.12 for single cones, or £12.87 if opting for double scoops. The study, which analysed the cost of a single scoop across UK coastal towns, placed Tynemouth second only to Barton-on-Sea in Hampshire, where a scoop costs £1.95. At the other end of the scale, Porthmadog in Wales was found to be the most expensive, with a single scoop averaging £3.85.
Local Ice Cream Spots
Tynemouth is home to several popular ice cream retailers, including Di Meo's, Cones, and Scorchio, though the study did not identify specific outlets. The town's Longsands beach holds the prestigious Blue Flag and Seaside Awards, adding to its appeal as a top seaside destination.
Regional Comparisons
The next nearest location to the North East to make the rankings is Saltburn in North Yorkshire, where a single scoop costs £2.37, amounting to £9.47 for a family of four. Zable noted that Saltburn also offers attractions such as its Victorian pier, cliff tramway, and surf-friendly coastline.
Insights from the Study
According to Zable, "Few things are as quintessentially British as a seaside ice cream, whether it’s a modest single scoop on a blustery afternoon or a double cone in the sunshine. But while the ritual may feel timeless, the price is anything but consistent." The company found that higher prices do not always correlate with larger, busier destinations, as some small seaside villages charge prices rivalling the most visited coastal locations. This reflects how limited competition, rather than tourism demand alone, can shape pricing. Zable added: "There is still excellent value to be found at the seaside; you just need to know where to look."
