Townrow's to close St Ives store after 155 years of trading
Townrow's St Ives store to close after 155 years

Townrow's, a family-owned department store business founded in 1871, has announced the closure of its branch in St Ives, Cambridgeshire, ending its presence in the town. The company cited challenging trading conditions, shifting consumer spending patterns and rising operating costs as reasons for the decision.

A long-established retailer under pressure

The independent retailer, which has operated a small network of stores for more than 150 years, acquired its 10,000 sq ft St Ives branch in February 2009 after the site's former owner, Eaden Lilley, entered administration. Townrow's also runs stores in Maldon and Frinton-on-Sea in Essex, offering a range of products including fashion, footwear and homeware.

Although a final closing date has not yet been confirmed, the department store is expected to launch a closing-down sale in the coming weeks as it prepares to cease trading.

Managing Director's statement

Managing Director Edward Townrow told The Hunts Post: "Like many independent retailers, we have faced increasingly challenging trading conditions, rising operating costs and changes in shopping habits. Despite exploring a number of alternatives, we have regrettably been unable to establish a financially sustainable future for the store in its current form."

He added: "What makes this decision particularly difficult is the extraordinary relationship we have with the people of St Ives. Our customers have been nothing short of wonderful. Over the years, we have been privileged to welcome generations of families through our doors."

Gratitude and next steps

Mr Townrow expressed appreciation for the community's support, saying: "We have shared in their everyday lives, celebrated special occasions with them and formed friendships that extend far beyond the shop floor. Their kindness, warmth and loyalty have meant more to us than I can possibly express. I want every customer to know how genuinely grateful we are for their support."

The store will hold a closing-down sale in the coming weeks. Mr Townrow concluded: "Although this marks the end of a chapter for our existing St Ives store, we remain committed to our other stores and to the values that have defined Townrow for more than 150 years. Finally, to our customers, our colleagues and the entire St Ives community: thank you, from the bottom of my heart. It has been an absolute privilege to be part of your town."
