Tomahawk, the hugely popular steakhouse on Newcastle Quayside, has closed its doors, but its story is not over. The venue will undergo a major makeover and reopen under a new name, NIPO.
From Tomahawk to NIPO
Tomahawk first opened in March 2018 and quickly became a favourite spot for diners, known for its steaks and massive Sunday roasts. The restaurant was also a filming location for Geordie Shore, with stars like Gaz Beadle and Aaron Chalmers spotted inside.
The closure was announced in a Facebook post that said: "We're making some exciting changes behind the scenes and look forward to sharing more with you soon. Further information and updates will be announced on our social media channels over the coming weeks. We'd like to apologise for any inconvenience this may cause and thank you for your patience and understanding."
What to Expect at NIPO
NIPO takes its name from Nipo-Brasileiro, the Japanese-Brazilian community. The new restaurant will offer a fusion of Japanese and Brazilian cuisine, including sushi, robata-style cooking, and fire-cooked picanha. A social media post teased: "A shared heritage, coming soon to Newcastle Quayside from the creators of Rio Brazilian Steakhouse. Two cultures. One table."
The Tomahawk in the Metrocentre remains open, but the Quayside branch ceased trading last month. This follows the closure of another Tomahawk in Morpeth earlier this year.
