Søstrene Grene to Open Second Edinburgh Store at Gyle

Danish homeware chain Søstrene Grene is set to open a new store at Edinburgh's Gyle Shopping Centre, marking its second location in the Scottish capital and ninth in the country. The shopping centre's website lists the store as "coming soon," though no official opening date has been confirmed.

Prime Retail Destination

The Gyle Shopping Centre, described as the capital's "most established" shopping destination, hosts a range of retailers and eateries including Boots, Clarks, Starbucks, Next, New Look, Pandora, Superdrug and Costa. The new Søstrene Grene will join this lineup, following the brand's first Edinburgh store at Waverley Market, which opened in 2024.

The expansion adds to Søstrene Grene's growing Scottish presence, with stores already in Aberdeen, Inverness, Glasgow, Dundee and Stirling.

Scandinavian-Inspired Offerings

While details about the new store are limited, it is expected to offer the brand's signature Scandinavian-inspired décor, ranging from furniture and homeware to arts, crafts and gifts.

Richard Power, UK & Ireland Country Manager for Søstrene Grene, told Invest in Edinburgh: "Gyle Shopping Centre is a prime retail destination and we can’t wait to welcome shoppers to experience our unique Scandinavian atmosphere. Our expansion into Waverley Market in 2024 was met with such a positive response and we’re confident the new Edinburgh store will be just as well received."

Brand Growth and Popularity

Søstrene Grene, known for combining affordability with trendy, minimalist aesthetics, has gained popularity since entering the UK in 2016. Its shopping experience is built around the Danish concept of 'Hygge', symbolising cosiness, comfort and wellbeing.

The brand was founded in 1973 by husband and wife duo Inger Grene and Knud Cresten Vaupell Olsen. It is represented by fictional sisters 'Anna' and 'Clara', who "represent the business." The founders aimed to create a "one of a kind" retailer reflecting their love for fashion, ballet and classical music, with each store thoughtfully laid out through beautiful product displays, music and storytelling.

Now run by the second generation of the Grene family, brothers Mikkel and Cresten, the chain has grown to more than 400 stores worldwide, available in 16 countries and online in 18 markets. In the UK, there are more than 70 stores, with plans to increase this to 100 by the end of 2027.

Other Retail Developments

In related high street news, Korean beauty brand Pureseoul is set to open its first Scottish store at Edinburgh's St James Quarter by the end of August. The store will feature more than 2,000 products from brands like COSRX, Medicube and Beauty of Joseon, along with UK exclusives.

Nike is also expanding at Livingston's Designer Outlet, securing a larger unit measuring 11,409 sq. ft. Set to open in late September, it will offer customers "an elevated shopping experience" with more choice across lifestyle and performance categories.
